Put on whatever nature sounds you prefer. Rain, crashing waves, thunderstorms; all of these have helped me as a graveyard worker with earplugs in plus the background nature noise to help mitigate when lawnmowing or leafblowing is happening outside my apartment.

Rain and thunderstorms used to be nice for me… used to.

7ish years ago we (wife and I) rescued a pitbull mix. Well three of them, but only one has an issue.

Wind, planes, rain, thunder, all of that kicks on the fight or flight response to 110%.

If she is crated, she will try to bust out to the point of injuring herself. At our hold house we had a two story, she broke through a banister spindle and nearly fell to the ground floor. Hard wood. Would have been bad. We’ve found her in the top loading washing machine - it was closed. She will try to go through solid objects. Walls, doors, windows, whatever.

CBD is about the only thing that helps her. We’ve tried various medications through the vet, even one they use as a sedative per-surgery.

Its been raining here for about two weeks, on top of other issues in life, and I have a migraine that may just kill me at this point. Not to mention sleep deprivation.

Also, as current day shift at my new job - I hate it, I want to go back to graveyard shifts, lol. Though, I did get some comments when I stopped at a liquor store right after they opened. Once they realized I worked overnight, they used it to mess with OTHER customers, lol.

Luckily my dog was a puppy with noisy kids so he doesn’t get too stressed by thunder. He does go to his doggy bed and growl really low to ward off the demons

People talking about light mode and completely ignoring that every app launches with a completely white screen, brighter than the sun.

Since being diagnosed with ADHD I finally accepted that all the common advice for sleeping doesn’t work on me. If I get stuck in hyper focus a bit of phone time can break it long enough to switch off.

Being neurodivergent in general has meant that basically all the “common sense” personal advice doesn’t apply to me I’ve learned

“Struggling to be productive? Just remove all distractions!” Nope, doesn’t work, never worked. In fact it makes it worse

“Struggling to sleep? Just try XYZ and keep a regular sleep schedule!”, nope, do my own thing, works better

“Struggling with burnout/exhaustion? You need to go and do things!” Nope, that will make it worse

And so on and so on

In a pinch, flipping the pillow to the cool side and getting up to pee has been helpful for my ADHD ass.

    YSK:

Night color shifting is great, but grayscale is even better at helping your brain settle the fuck down.

Extra-dim accessibility modes like Reduce White Point on iOS are useful for everyone.

Stick both of these on an accessibility shortcut and they’ll push you toward a textier, less scrolly use of your device, which will also help you go the fuck to sleep.

Most importantly, if you’re not using a “night mode” display filter to force the tint to the red side of things w the screen, your phone (and all monitors and tv’s) projects light in the blue end of the spectrum, which mirrors sunlight, which tells your brain it is not time to sleep.

There is real science behind that. However, tech companies just created an adjacent flavor filter of dubious actual value to increase user engagement and avoid potential lawsuits.

People have read books in bed for centuries without issue via all sorts of light sources.

It’s all down to good lifestyle behavior.

Well to be fair, the lights used to be candles and then incandescent bulbs, now it’s led that also emits blue light

On the waking side of reading the alien enemies act will be enacted April 20, but I don’t see how that’s any better.
