Hegseth Goes to War Against Photographers Taking Bad Pictures of Him (rollingstone.com)

Community iconc/nottheonion@lemmy.world by
Tony Bark@pawb.social

Press photographers were reportedly barred from Pentagon press briefings after Pete Hegseth‘s staff became irked over unflattering photos of the defense secretary. The office of the notoriously vain Cabinet member — a former Fox News host who had a hair and makeup studio built in the Pentagon shortly after being confirmed — should probably have more important things on his mind, chiefly the war in Iran, and, perhaps, the elementary school there that the United States appears to have bombed.

The trauma of the tundra tongue: an experimental and computational study of lingual tissue damage following adhesion to a cold metal lamp post - Head & Face Medicine

A scientific study on peak temperature and gradients of injury of putting your tongue on freezing metal. (link.springer.com)

Community iconc/mildlyinteresting@lemmy.world by
Quilotoa@lemmy.ca

Avulsion injury occurred in 89 of 164 experiments (54%) with risk increasing with the detachment force (p < 0.001). Peak tongue detachment force was associated with contact time (p < 0.001), tongue region (apex versus basis, p < 0.01), and release type (rapid versus gradual, p < 0.001). A non-linear relationship was found between metal temperature and detachment force (p < 0.01), with peak adherence at approximately −7.5 °C. Histological evaluation demonstrated intra-epidermal damage that could be rationalized with computer modelling. Nearly all experiments (92%) caused macroscopic, but not microscopic, cold injury, with risk increasing at lower metal temperatures. Computer simulations suggest that tissue damage is related to superficial tissue freezing that occurs under typical winter conditions and short exposure times.

Are the Mysteries of Quantum Mechanics Beginning To Dissolve? | Quanta Magazine (quantamagazine.org)

Community iconc/science@mander.xyz by
neutronbumblebee@mander.xyz

Ultimately, the arguments over quantum mechanics have much bigger stakes: what reality is. The basic problem is that the theory tells us what we can expect to observe if we make measurements of a quantum system such as an atom or an electron. It doesn’t tell us how the world is, only what we’ll see if we look. Quantum uncertainty, the physicist and philosopher Jeffrey Bub of the University of Maryland told me, “doesn’t simply represent ignorance about what is the case, but a new sort of ignorance about something that doesn’t yet have a truth value, something that simply isn’t one way or the other before we measure.”

Its a LILYGO T3S3 (a module focused on handheld use) stuck into a housing I modeled myself and 3d printed out of ASA plastic. It has some Chinese “high gain” 915MHz antenna inside the grain silo looking part, which is oversize to prevent too much signal reflection/distortion from the plastic being too close to the antenna. Its powered by 18ga alarm system wire that I draped down the roof to a 5v power supply on the deck. And since I’m renting, non permanent modifications only, thus the clamp to the vent pipe.

How to find the standard term for a concept/idea?

Community iconc/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world by
Ad4mWayn3@lemmy.world

I feel like every time I try to give a rough description of some idea or concept to a search engine, the results are seldom anything more than useless/misleading. But then, when I find out there’s a technical or standard term for whatever concept I’m trying to convey, using that term drastically improves the search results (even if in the end I don’t get the answer I need). Since this is a struggle that I face pretty often, I will many times just give up on raw searching and end up describing the exact thing to some LLM, even the AI assist of whatever search engine I am using.

Migration minister fails UK citizenship test question (independent.co.uk)

Community iconc/nottheonion@lemmy.world by

Migration minister Mike Tapp failed a UK citizenship test question before insisting he is a “proud Brit.” Speaking at a parliamentary committee on settlement, citizenship, and integration on Tuesday, 10 March, the Labour MP for Dover and Deal admitted he did not know the height of the London Eye - one of the questions in the official UK citizenship test. “I am confident that I would be able to pass the test, I’m a proud Brit,” he added, but promised to “take a keen interest” in knowing the answer “when it comes up again” in the same meeting next year. Chair of the committee, Lord Don Foster, said he will “follow up” on Mr Tapp’s word.
