Successful black man where have you been?
Trump has been in office. He went into hiding.
Venezuela.
There are no successful black men, and we’ll prove it by making sure they leave the country.
There was a time when all memes were demotivational posters.
Despair.com (apparently still around!) was my go-to back in the day for those
I miss those
It was a more civilized age back then…
We where supposed to build the future.
Got addicted to memes instead.
Sorry Gen Z
But those memes though

Ate too many Avocado Toasts for it and forgot to shake the job tree with all the jobs for us.
Wait, TikTok wasn’t supposed to be the whole future? /s

I remember when memes were just a picture of a duck with wheels or a gif of a dancing baby.
I remember when we sent memes via fax…

Alright Gramma, let’s get you back to bed
You used to have to call the internet on the phone!
I wasted untold hours on the old quickmeme site.
There was a time before that too.
Yeah plain text based & image only memes
I put on my robe and wizard hat, that dancing baby gif, all your base, etc
There was also some push back on posting images with text embedded because it makes the text unsearchable/not compatible with screen readers at the time/forced font and color that can make it harder to read, but then the image macro sites took off that made it simple for anyone to create from a template and there was no turning back
there was also the motivational poster era, the “wut” year, whatever ytmnd was/is…
I’m surprised that All Your Base hasn’t made a comeback. I figured with the broken English, catchy phrase, and danceable tune it would surely trend again.
I dunno if it’s gonna take off (every zig)
It has no chance to survive

Back when racism was at least thinly veiled…

Agree. The whole point is to lean into a racist stereotype, and then subvert it.
I miss the veil
I miss the simpler days
I missed this guy!

Ah yes, people used to break the internet, now we’re breaking real life.
There was a time when memes were just dudes fighting snails in the margins of medieval manuscripts.

Whoa, do you know where this is from?
I remembered your request and have finally found some semblance of a source.
Hey, thanks for coming back to this!
That seems wrong, unfortunately. It was a weekly magazine, and there was a May 25 edition that year (which also doesn’t contain it).
Flipping through was totally worth it for the early Churchill stuff, the ominous commentary on how cool getting reparations from Germany is going, the article satirising Henry Ford’s promise to make horses obsolete, and the 1/3 of cartoons I completely didn’t understand, amongst other things. The HFT in the corner of this cartoon might be a hint if someone else were to try, but no artist immediately presents themselves.
The past.
Sorry I’m not more helpful.
Speaking of ancient memes I showed this to my teen the other day and they didn’t even begin to understand.
Hmm, wired earbuds (RIP) and the phone with buttons dates it a bit, but captchas are still around (and infidelity). Although, I’m seeing less and less of the distorted text kind these days.
I haven’t seen a captcha like that in years and my teen didn’t even understand it as a captcha at all. If you’re still seeing those I’m definitely curious where.
Uhh, I’m thinking I’ve had to fill them out to read scientific papers at some point recently. Maybe other more web 1.0 type pages, although most of them are moving over to the Cloudflare JavaScript checkbox service.
