  • Makes sense, historically.

A suspension bridge is one in which the primary structural element is formed by ropes or cables which are suspended across a gap in a hanging arc.

In the simplest form of that bridge, the deck is directly attached to the wires and follows the same arc, like here.

The bridge most of us think of as a “suspension bridge” is the “suspended deck suspension bridge” in which the deck is also suspended, by more cables, below the primary suspension. So there’s two independent suspensions going on there.

But in all cases the bit that makes it a suspension bridge is the main structural cable.

  • A lot of the reviews that are for the “wrong item” are there because of the seller repurposing the listing.

The seller will list some item that is easy to get good reviews on, like a hammer or something. Then after they rack up several hundred 5* reviews saying “Works great, seems high quality!” they edit the listing to change the item title, description, everything to a new product but keep the reviews.

Then the new product gets a big boost from the high review count and star rating of the previous product.

    Very scummy.

  • That’s part of it, but it’s certainly ALSO a mechanism to encourage people to use an account, or to register if they haven’t, because that’s more trackable and monetisable.

Same reason why when you hit an X post or an Instagram post it normally lets you see a little tease but roadblocks you to sign in as soon as you start scrolling. They want you signed in for their own reasons.

If google wanted, they could implement a range of measures to disincentivise bots, like not counting views apart from signed-in users so there’s less reason for bots to be engaging with the platform, but that also is bad for their ad view monetisation metrics so they surely don’t want to do that. They’d rather inconvenience the user.

  • Sus timing, though it’s certainly just branding.

The whole “My-” prefix for “My Documents” and “My Computer” and all that is something that was around since the 90s, and really served to emphasise the “Personal” is “Personal Computer” at a time when PCs were coming into the home for the first time.

Nowadays that branding is really unnecessary and feels pretty antiquated too, especially in an era where most stuff for most people is online, and the emphasis is.more on connected seamless stuff rather than a cute little folder to put your things in.

  • This painting wasn’t done carefully with a brush or roller, it was done by spraying with a jet of paint.

It took them no time at all to paint this, because they just blasted it at the same time they were doing the rest of the wall, without even caring it was there.

What would have taken time would be to try and carefully spray around without getting any paint on it (or the proper solution, to remove it from the wall before painting)
