Yea, one of the two lanes is likely closed for a lenghty stretch. So someone with a stop/slow sign at either end of the closure, who are on the phone or walkie talkie with each other. Bunch of peole go one way on the open road, then a bunch of people go the other way on the open stretch.
Probably hella annoying for locals as its big delay. But im a city boy and only see these on road trips, so Im usually in no rush, a good mode, and able to enjoy the scenery.

Do we know if this is the longest possible mapped walking route, or just the points fartest apart on the map from a satellite perspective? Gosh hows that compare to the longest possible drive?
The state statistic is more daming and informative I think. For someone without big travel money/time, America does have enough natural beauty (or whats left of it in this world) for most of a lifetime of travel and experince. Someone can be decently traveled, and have some corresponding broad ass horizons without having left the US.
