The Great Male Renunciation (French: Grande Renonciation masculine) is the historical phenomenon at the end of the 18th century in which wealthy men of the Western world stopped using bright colours, elaborate shapes and variety in their dress, which were left to women’s clothing. Instead, men concentrated on minute differences of cut, and the quality of the plain cloth.[1]
Coined by British psychologist John Flügel in 1930, it is considered a major turning point in the history of clothing in which the men relinquished their claim to adornment and beauty.[2] Flügel asserted that men “abandoned their claim to be considered beautiful” and “henceforth aimed at being only useful”.[3] The Great Renunciation encouraged the establishment of the suit’s monopoly on male dress codes at the beginning of the 19th century.

Agreed, for any non-trivial bug I just start dumping text into a word file to track what I’m doing. Like: error messages, values of variables at key places, libraries used, URLs of documentation and background reading and stackoverflow pages looked at, test fixes and their effects, etc. Then if someone asks me wtf I’ve been doing all day I can easily show them. Also, if I have the same problem a couple months later I can remind myself.

I used to like donuts, then one day I started making my own frosting and put it on cake and toast and other stuff. Eventually I got tired of it and I haven’t wanted donuts since. My theory is that donuts give you just enough frosting to want more but not enough to be satisfying, so you keep eating those blobs of deep-fried bread hoping to get enough frosting.
You don’t watch Troy and think it’s odd the characters are speaking English.
I get it. But movies that try to be realistic get extra points from me. Props to Apocalypto for having the actors speak in Yucatec Maya. (even though the movie and director have problems in other ways.)

When my BFF’s cat died, they were crying, upset, completely disconsolate. I was a bit suprised that they were even sadder than when their father had died. They said: “it’s because my cat never told me I was doing everything wrong.”
Likewise, there’s a saying along the lines of: every man is a hero to his dog. Some people talk to plants, or hug stuffed animals. So I think there’s value to that kind of relationship. Obviously if you ONLY talk to plants or stuffed animals then you might get a little weird, but otherwise it seems OK.

I’ll have to read that article you link above, it’s been a decade or so since I did any reading on technological revolutions in military affairs.
The only option left
Well, there was always the strategic option of maintaing a static western European front and winning the war elsewhere. e.g. overwhelming the Russian Empire and then concentrating your troops and using Stosstruppen tactics you’ve developed in the meantime. But keeping that front static wasn’t an option.
