Gil-galad was an elven-king;
Of him the harpers badly sing
For none can rightly say his name—
Jill misappropriates his fameJil Jalad it is!
The little known nickname for the guy Darmok ran into at Tenagra
that was his multidimensional twin, G R R Tolkien
Read as Iandalf.
“Gandalf” was a dwarf in Norse mythology. Tolkien didn’t invent the name.
Listen Legoland, I’m not from the Kingdom of Jondor.
Bahahha, my instance has this joke as a tagline.
The beacons are lit! Jondor calls for aid!
Jandalf the Jrey
I’ll save this meme as a jiff.
I use the pronunciation jif too.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronunciation_of_GIF
My reason is that I prefer soft g sound when it is followed by a soft vowel I or E. This is the rule used in Latin languages such as Spanish.
Jandalf is funny but doesn’t make sense to me because “a” is a hard vowel with respect to affecting the sound of a preceding “g”.
So I was surprised when I played Elden Ring and saw the Gaols, which is apparently an old English spelling for “jail” and pronounced jail.
It’s all nicely confusing.
I laughed at the meme…my wife is like “what?”
I sighed and said are you sure you want me to explain it?
She was like, do you want to?
I’m like this has many layers. None of which are in a direction you care about.
“It’s a comic where JRR Tolkien says “Gandalf” is actually pronounced “Jandalf”, a reference to the dumb side of the gif/jif debate. Also someone in the comments posted a denim-clad Gandalf since denim versions of things are often called that thing but with a “J” at the start of the name.”
You see though, I would have to explain the gif / jif debate. Then I would have to explain what a gif is
Then I would have to explain what a Gandalf is.
And the way I would have to explain what a Gandalf is, is to remind her of the character with a stick from the lego game where you had to get up to swap characters… But he is also from lord of the rings.
Then I have to explain what lotr is. And how it’s different from Harry Potter.
And in the end she would say. “That’s stupid”
She must be insanely attractive.
I told her “someone said you must be insanely attractive”
She said why?
I said because of that post I made the other day about gif jif Gandalf jandalf.
She said “why would they say I must be insanely attractive because of that post?”
I said… Because you must be insanely attractive for me to put up with it. But they said you must be insanely attractive!
“That doesn’t make sense” she said. “I’m insanely adorable.”
🤦
Haha.
Well, she does sound adorable and you clearly communicate. Lucky you. Am kinda jealous, tbh.
All the best!
Oh no, it’s a new Steve Wilhite situation.
This stresses me so much.
By the way it’s pronounced “Gee Aye Eff”.
one point twenty-one jigawatts
Jigabyte
For the curious “Gandalf” is made up of two old norse words “gandr” meaning a walking stick or staff and “álfr” moaning an elf. The movies pronounce it correctly of course.
Actually, I think that was C.S. Lewis.
It’s pronounced NarNIA
It’s pronounced Ke$ha Louise.
