This is the rule used in Latin languages such as Spanish. Jandalf is funny but doesn’t make sense to me because “a” is a hard vowel with respect to affecting the sound of a preceding “g”. So I was surprised when I played Elden Ring and saw the Gaols, which is apparently an old English spelling for “jail” and pronounced jail. It’s all nicely confusing.
