I get more and more grateful to be born in Europe. The US is a real life satire fever dream at this point.
I feel like someone is going to hack one of these and then do a school shooting
You bet your ass. You think with Big Balls storing millions of people’s data on unsecure servers and Las Vegas being slammed with a hack that would make Hollywood claim is unrealistic means there will be script kiddies ready with pre-made hacks that would make them kill people. This is cyberpunk 2077 level shit.
WFH
I guess good since cops would rather all the children be shot than face a threat.
Too many guns leads to weekly school shootings.
US: We need more guns!
Article says there’s a pepper ball launcher and a glass hammer, so this thing is mainly for surveillance and mild distractions, which is much better than I was prepared to read.
"Currently, an officer’s job is to run toward gunfire, alone, with no support or intel—basically a standoff. With our drones, they’re not alone; they know what the suspect looks like, what they’re doing, and we take point around every corner.
“We usually find the shooter before they do and keep them occupied. Every officer who’s seen this live has said they want it.”
If this actually encourages them to do their jobs, great. If this is just a kickback to private industry and further militarizing schools while police still sit cowering, than I know where they can dock those drones…
It’s a foot in the door because of that attitude. No one jumps straight to Gatling guns on drones at the elementary school they might however do pepper ball, then tazer, then hard markers, rubber bullets, actual bullets.
It’s absolutely number 2… They leaving the parking lot.
“Currently, an officer’s job is to run toward gunfire, alone, with no support or Intel”
That’s a lie, they don’t run toward gunfire at all. And they’ll wait until they have at least three departments of officers before doing anything.
If they want to break glass as a distraction they can do that already, they don’t need a drone. And their plan to break glass will startle an already on edge and unstable shooter, instead of using tactics to de-esecalate the situation. Also, isn’t this what swat is for? They have no qualms about flashbanging babies in cribs but when it comes to an actual situation all of a sudden they need drones so no cops are in any iota of danger.
I’m sure this will solve the problem. And, no chance at all it will be abused, somehow.

Fantastic. Remote controlled school shootings.
I wonder when the first one will happen?
Innocent children will die to trigger happy drone cops. It’s going to be a remote controlled Uvalde.
How long before one of these shoots a regular kid?
I am an OCP stockholder.
Didn’t expect to see a Robocop meme today, but I’m all about it!
Hail Hydra?
I think we know what the next step is here. Mass shooters start using armed drones.
This is such a tricky subject.
You could go with a more strict gun regulations. Coupled with more help for vulnerable people. And free mental healthcare.
Or.
MUTHERFUDGING DRONES, bitches. It’s such a tricky subject. So tricky.
This isn’t tik tok you can say Motherfucking.
do we have to have this same argument every godsdamned thread?
Argument? Nah. Just trying to help someone who seems to need help in forcefully expressing themselves.
just, i’m tired boss. no one likes being the language police, no one like being language policed. just let people talk.
Ploppers
In fact I’d prefer if people just used the actual cuss words. Self-censoring is such a bullshit. Social media is a plague on our species.
I need more things to have a block censorship option. Like streaming music services often have a ‘block explicit’ option. I want a ‘block censored’ option.
YouTube has a thing where if you’re on data and not wifi, they will not let you watch explicit videos even if you’re signed into your account, which may or may not be old enough to drink, itself.
You have to do a thing in your phone’s connection settings and hook it to a specific DNS (like “dns.adguard.com”, which allows you to play mobile games while connected to a network without any ads)
Why are you lying online?
man I made an account just to go troll idiots and holy shit is their moderation ever so fucking bad
people can say “I would drive over them” about people crossing a bridge, but if you say, “I’d drive over you tbh”, nope, not okay.
not to mention the dumb automatic word filters regardless of context
You could go with a more strict gun regulations. Coupled with more help for vulnerable people. And free mental healthcare.
I’m skeptical any of this would be more than a bandaid solution, a large part of the problem has got to be how highschool in the US is just inherently a miserably dehumanizing experience.
Do not accept perfection as an enemy of progress!
If “progress” here means drugging students to tolerate their circumstances, or holding the threat of pepper spray drones over them (doubt this will stay limited to active shooter scenarios), I think it might be progress in the wrong direction.
I’m pretty sure they meant that the gun regulation, help and free healthcare would be progress, not so much the drugs and the drones.
I guess that makes sense. It just frustrates me that the scope of the discussion is all solutions that would not help directly with any problems potentially murderously suicidal teens have in their lives, the growth of those problems which you might imagine is the reason this has become a trend, but instead basically just preventing them from responding destructively.
but which of those options will make more money for the people in charge?
Are the drones flown by AI? …looks like there’s even more money to be made!
🤢
The drones, stored in secure boxes on campus, can be deployed within five seconds of silent panic buttons being activated. The devices—operated remotely by a team in Texas—provide constant live video feeds to first responders and, in some cases, fire nonlethal projectiles to delay or incapacitate an assailant.
To me, these aren’t a bad idea. Immediate response and non-ISH-lethal. They are simply the progression of enforcement technology.
What they are not, is a solution to school shootings. They are not even a bandaid. Some people (law makers) just don’t seem to know what “prevention” means.
You said
To me, these aren’t a bad idea.
and yet you also said
The devices—operated remotely by a team in Texas
in the very same post.
I wouldn’t want some bored trigger happy gun nutjob from Texas playing shoot the bad guys with pepper spray on a games console where my kids and their multi ethnic friends are the NPCs.
That’s a fair assessment. I’m guessing it’s that way because that’s where the company that operates this is. Which, now that I think about it, probably is a poor way to manage the whole program.
So I’ll post-edit to say: “with local pilot and oversight”
“to stop mass shooters”
America, just throw more guns at the problem!
Its apparently the only profitable way to solve the problem. Pure bullshit insanity.
You know how most school shootings can be stopped in the US? Safe storage laws. Most of the time the shooter is an underage kid who got access to their parents’ guns and went to shoot up the school. Obviously it wouldn’t stop shit like Uvalde and Sandy Hook. But it would still stop a fuckload of smaller shootings we don’t hear about because they are background noise at this point.
How would you enforce such a law? Sounds like all they would do would be to allow you to prosecute people after the fact.
Yes, and when people realize it is being enforced they will do it more.
Also add the cavet that if a gun is stolen and misused by a member of the household, they would be liable for whatever actions were taken. This putting them on the hook for the shooting, too.
Honestly I’m not sure about that. Most people don’t want their kids to be murderers in the first place, yet here we are. They never think their kid would do it.
That’s wishful thinking. We’ve seen time and time again that parents are (willfully) ignorant about their kids mental health issues and will look their other way while their precious sketching hallways and figures out the choke points.
You’re responsible for the people your gun kills is a pretty simple fix and would probably lead to lots of people buying gun safes overnight.
You’re responsible for the people your gun kills is a pretty simple fix
Wait, that isn’t a thing as of now?
Safe storage laws, licenses and responsibility for anything that happens with your gun. No public carry laws. Removal of gun owning rights for people that commit violent or drug related crime. These are like the bare minimum needed to have a society with guns.
Police vists for people acting unhinged online and check they dont have any illegal weapons. Different classes of licenses with increased scruity.
Next mass shooting headline: Bullied nerd hacks armed drones in school to extract bloody revenge.
