Source is The Onion. There’s more than just the headline, and it’s a classic.
I kinda wanted his paralysis to be curable but because he’s an orphan he can’t afford it, and the well wishing Christians surrounding him refusing to contribute anything other than prayers to his recovery to be framed as a perfectly Christian thing to do.
Sports events are really proof of the powerlessness of God, as every player and every supporter prays for their team to win, yet only one does.
Fun fact, traditionally speaking “Vanity” refers to the belief that God cares about the little things in your life, and that those prayers are worthy of his time. Sports victories being a perfect example of the type of thing you should not be praying for. You should obtain victory through effort and determination on your own terms, asking God to intervene is A) a profound admission of your own incompetence, and 2: really fucking selfish.
If you still believe in a god, google ‘Harlequin Fetus’.
If you don’t, don’t. Seriously, don’t.
Thank you for reminding me of that suppressed memory.
Harlequin syndrome is not debilitating, so treatment is not normally necessary.
I looked it up, doesn’t seem that bad.
Every inch of your body’s skin being hardened and cracked to the point nearly every surface nerve is exposed and raw doesn’t seem that bad?
What does seem bad to you?
Wikipedia didn’t have that detail…sounds a lot worse now.
It’s not something that needs medical intervention, necessarily, because there’s nothing that can be done, and most live through it. Also, until shockingly recently, the medical field assumed (or maybe hoped?) infants can’t feel pain.
Turns out they can, though.
e: I can’t spell
Maybe update the Wiki, you seem to know a lot about the condition.
The language used is very mild.
I wouldn’t change anything except the assumption in the overall medical field that infants can’t feel pain. I don’t know much more about this specific condition, but I have a different condition in which they assumed infants can’t feel pain, and they were wrong enough that I still have trauma from that.
Take any medical knowledge from 20+ years ago that sounds horribly painful with a grain of salt, because that was the assumption relatively recently. Some doctors who learnt medicine more than 20 years ago still think that.
e: Groundbreaking research in 2015 says babies do feel pain. 2015.
‘Three words that made me an atheist: Paediatric Oncology Ward’.
I can’t remember who said that, but it’s spot on.
My stepping away from My religion occurred I think about 5 years ago. So my middle-ish thirties. Right about the time that they tried to make it illegal for women to be able to have access to medical services. And I argued that if the government has the ability to force a person to bring another person to term then the government has the level of authority it needs to take away your guns or do any other thing that would impose its rule over you via force. And when the church people who finally pulled the mask off and said yeah but at least this version of tyranny is okay according to the Bible was when I stepped away. Prior to that I had struggled with the concept of if there is a being that could have created all of existence, us as human beings would be like a flea trying to comprehend the lunar landing. And if a being of that caliber exist I cannot fathom that it would care whether or not you touched yourself at night. Or who you were in the bed with.

The more we learn about both the universe at large, and the history of our own species and planet, the more that seems true.
Human civilization as we conceive it has only existed for like 10k years.
Human beings as we conceive them have existed for like 300k- 400k years before that ☝️.
The first human-like creatures (Habilis), existed for 1600k years before that ☝️.
There was 66000k years of creatures just existing and adapting and competing and evolving from the point of the dinosaurs being extinct until the point of Habilis ☝️.
And to get to the point of the dinosaurs being extinct, it took 3700000k of life evolving on earth ☝️.
Those numbers are truly mind numbingly, staggeringly huge. Human civilization has existed for 10k, and we’re talking about a process that took 3,700,000k of random chance to get to that. The idea that God cares about what you jerk off to is wild.
lol at the religious downvoting this
