Look, I have a suggestion that will change your life. You can never live another way again.

Go buy 10-20 pairs of socks, all same. When you get a hole in one sock, you only throw away the one sock. You never have to worry about mixing and matching. If you’ve got two socks, they count as a pair.

I’m not even matching my keycaps to socks, nor wearing anything special, I just found a specific pair of socks I liked and I’ve bought heaps over the years.

  • Zed for lightweight, Kate for regular text and the Jetbrains suite for when I want something that uses all of my RAM, but has a lot of niceties.

The only time I open up vscodium is when I want to conveniently edit files in a docker container that are part of the image rather than mapped from my filesystem

  • To be fair, it’s also the tankies that are saying anyone further right of them is a shitlib.

I do agree with you that there are plenty of people that are leftists and NOT tankies. I’m one of them. Genocide is bad regardless of the economic system of the country performing it. Authoritarianism is bad whether it’s left- or right-wing.

  • You must not have been to the tankieverse then.

I don’t remember if it was /r/sino or some even further authleft sub, but they had literal manuals in their subreddit wiki for debating non-tankies on thinks like the Uyghur genocide. Similarly, fediverse tankies pretend that China and Russia (which doesn’t even pretend to be a communist country) can do no wrong and if you oppose anything they do, you’re just “spreading state dept talking points” (If you DO say you’re also against the palestinian genocide, not just the war in Ukraine, they ignore that part).

Personally I blocked some of their most prominent communities and posters. Thing is, you’re on lemmy.world which I believe is already defedrated from lemmygrad and hexbear (they absolutely loathed .world users too). My instance admin believes in free speech and peoples’ right to choose which communities they see or block, so we’re not defederated from those instances and until I blocked them, it was an absolute cesspool in my feed.

Here is the lemm.ee thread discussing potential defederation in august 2023. .world had already defederated by then so it’s possible you joined after your instance had already defederated, I guess.

    Here’s an excerpt:

Coming back to the events of the past few days: soon after my removal of the comment containing the symbol from the meta thread, two posts popped up on hexbear. One was focused on insulting and spreading lies about me personally. Another was focused on diminishing the horrors of the soviet occupation in my country. In the comments under both of these posts (and in a few other threads on hexbear), I noticed some seriously disturbing bigotry against my people. There were comments which reflected the anti-Estonian propaganda of the current Russian state, things like:

    - Suggesting that my people has no right to exist
    - Stating that my people (and other Baltic nations) are subhuman
    - Claiming that anybody critical of both nazi and soviet occupations is themselves a nazi and a holocaust denier

It is noteworthy that the hexbear admins at least agreed that this shit was way too much and stepped in. But this should give you an idea of what kind of people are out there.

  • A little bit of both tbh. Many US cities have ridiculous zoning laws that require you to build nothing but single family homes in huge suburbs. No medium density and no mixed zones (think grocery store next to your home or even downstairs from your condo unit). Liberal areas have it too. It’s about as universal as healthcare is in my country. The origin is, of course, racism.

There’s other forms of red tape too, like building codes, but the inability to build like a 6 family 2 or 3 story condo complex is costing the US a lot. Lost productivity, forced car dependence, higher infrastructure costs, etc. And of course higher real estate prices because you get fewer units per unit of land area.
