I checked the wiki looks like doctor told him and he embraced it.

1938, Hitler’s doctors put him on a meat-free diet, and his public image as a vegetarian was fostered; from 1942, he self-identified as a vegetarian.

Several eyewitness sources maintain Hitler was a vegetarian because of his concern for animal suffering, noting that he was often distressed by images of animal cruelty and suffering

Dude gassed people but was distressed by animal suffering is weird to me.

May I ask why weird (just as curiosity about humans) - as in that people that are ok with one are/should generally be on with the other (as those are nominally equal things if not specified) or that one trumps the other on the sorta same scale (that hurting people is always worse than hurting but the same thing/act)?

Lol i could write phd paper on this topic. To keep it short, Humans are just animals. Hurting a cat is no different to me than a person.

Would i agree to put down a bad person or dog? sure i would, but they had to earn that first and be beyond rehabilitation.

he felt no remorse at the suffering of masses that didn’t actively do anything wrong to deserve the treatment but He felt distressed if I randomly kicked a dog. Which to me is the same picture. Hypocrisy to my mind.
