Luanti/voxelibre server question

submitted by

Hey yall,

Quick thing. I love how dead simple a server on luanti is! Been having fun again like the old Mc days.

My question is, when I open the server up to friends and open my router port, I still am wondering what I need for more security. I usually disable that port at night because of paranoia.

I have noob networking knowledge and have a couple nas setups etc but I dont really understand the security part. I never worried about it in the old days but now im more concerned. I do have a vpn, would it be possible to route the server through it? Do I need reverse proxy (never in my life understood this term, so confusing to me)

Just generally, set an allowlist, set the Max number of users to like 5.

But really, to be safer, set up a Tailscale network for your friends, that way it’s not on the open internet and your router doesn’t need to forward.

Gotcha, I need to read up on tailscale again, I know of it.

What about if I want a public server to mess around on?

Depends on your budget. I have a cheap VPS (Virtual Private Server) that I rent from a hosting provider. I use it to host a Luanti server and mess about with stuff that needs to be running publically accessible. In my head I write it off as a learning/homelab expense.

Edit: Actually there’s a guy on the Luanti forums that hosts free servers for people. His name is Walker. Has a thread on the forums somewhere about free hosting.
